OHG Projects This preservation project is based on the historic and cultural significance of the ‘jerz’, a miniature, long-handled axe traditionally carried by Shihu tribesmen of Musandam, the design and use of which has remained virtually unchanged since the Bronze Age. The craft of jerz-making is unique to Musandam, and local men traditionally carry the long-handled axe as part of their costume. However, as Musandam becomes integrated with the rest of Oman, the jerz is increasingly being replaced by the khanjar (ceremonial knife), and there are only a handful of metal smiths in Musandam who continue to cater to a limited local demand. As with Musandam pottery, the craft of jerz-making is little known outside of Musandam.
