Pottery - Salalah

Focused on the revitalization of latent craft skills for the urban women of Salalah, this project focuses on the continued use of the original clay resource located in Salalah, the reinstatement of original natural pigments and the reintroduction of distinctive ‘Salalah-style’ incense burner forms that typified the pottery and the region for centuries, and which remained prevalent through to the 1980’s.

Production of Salalah-ware pottery has virtually ceased in recent years, and there are few women who continue to practice the craft, although there is an existing skill base of approximately 15 women.

This project aims to reintroduce traditional designs and reinstate original natural pigments.
